About

My name is Paul.  My family and I have a small piece of land (.08 acres) and we're starting a farm.  This blog is about sustainable farming and composting.  I am also writing a book about it and using this blog to organize it.  The pages of the site are the chapters of the book and the posts are just things about sustainability, composting and farming.

There is all kinds of awesome stuff going on in the world related to sustainability and farming.  Sustainability is an exciting field.  Changes are occurring in agriculture, municipal waste and in the food industry that are good for people and good for the planet as well.  I am especially happy about the ways that industry is changing to facilitate the absorption of CO2 from the atmosphere by producing more biomass while processing waste in ways that are beneficial to the soil and for the environment.

I like trees.

I believe that by increasing operational efficiency and sustainability of agricultural operations, it is possible to generate as much food is required to feed human populations on earth.  I also believe that sustainable technologies will have many positive side-effects that will benefit people and our planet in different ways.

Some of my favorite plants are:
Learning about how they grow is how I spend much of my time.

Plants are generally good for you.  Plant based diets promote good health.

Animal based proteins are delicious and they're not evil or bad.  Sustainable livestock operations are possible that producer higher quality products while having a net positive impact on the environment.  Sustainable farming techniques are capable of reducing operational costs while improving quality and safety.  I believe that sustainable farming techniques are going to be used increasingly in industry to produce healthy animal based proteins for human sustenance in a way that improves the environment and contributes to stronger soils.

Paulownia is a tree that grows really well in many places with just a little compost and some intelligent water management.  My dream is to be a tree farmer.  I am learning a lot about cultivating Paulownia with minimal inputs because I believe that Paulownia trees are going to play a big part in our efforts to clean up our atmosphere while providing the products that we require in order to continue living on this planet.

My personal favorite tree is moringa oleifera because of the nutrition that it is providing for impoverished people living in tropical areas of the world.  Moringa is making it possible for children in impoverished, tropical areas to grow up with the nutrition required for normal, healthy physical development.  Children and nursing mothers in Africa, Asia and even South and Central America are growing up healthy and strong because of this amazing tree and the efforts of many people to make the plants available to local growers and to help the local populations to understand their production and use.

Learning about and experimenting with plants is kind of my thing.  I'm especially interested in re-building depleted soils and successfully growing crops in damaged soils.  I am rapidly becoming an expert on the biological activity that occurs in the soil around the roots of living plants.  I hope to be able to help people around the world to manage their soils better.  Mitigating different kinds of problems in the soil requires a broad base of chemical and biological knowledge and experience, which I am constantly building and researching with my available resources.

Algae production is another field that has potential for reducing negative environmental impacts while producing useful protein and lipids.  Current algae production systems are often responsible for increasing atmospheric CO2 levels, and sodium levels in available irrigation water.  Sustainable algae cultivation methods reduce sodium levels in irrigation water and draw CO2 out of the atmosphere.  Algae cultivation is even being used to filter CO2 out of industrial waste, converting it directly into an important product for agriculture and livestock production.

Agriculture is an exciting field with many new technical advances occurring all the time.  There are also ancient technologies that are often overlooked for increasing the productivity and safety of agricultural operations that have yet to be fully investigated and implemented.  Increases in efficiency and productivity in agriculture and livestock are pivotal in our ability to feed and clothe the growing populations of the world.  While we must increase our ability to produce protein and fiber, those increases must be tempered with safety and environmental concerns.  The good news is that sustainable farming techniques are capable of helping us to achieve these goals.

My next book will probably be all about farming trees or about gardening with limited resources.
